The best time to visit Stuðlagil Canyon is during the summer months, from June to August. During this time, the snow has melted, and the river's water level is lower, revealing more of the basalt columns. The weather is also more favorable for hiking. However, this is also the busiest time, so if you prefer a quieter experience, visiting in late spring or early fall can also be a good option.
Getting There
Getting to Stuðlagil Canyon requires a bit of planning, but it’s definitely worth the effort. The canyon is about a 2-3 hour drive from Egilsstaðir, the largest town in East Iceland. Once you reach the parking area near the farm of Grund, you’ll need to cross a bridge and then either take a short walk to the western viewpoint or a longer hike to get up close to the canyon from the eastern side.
Western Viewpoint: This side offers a quick and easy walk to a viewing platform that overlooks the canyon. It’s perfect if you’re short on time or prefer a less strenuous option.
Eastern Side Hike: To get up close and personal with the canyon, head to the eastern side. This requires a longer hike (about 5-6 kilometers round trip), but the views are absolutely worth it. You’ll be able to walk right down to the river and experience the canyon in all its glory.
