The best time to visit Múlagljúfur Canyon is during the summer months, from late June to early September, when the weather is mild, and the trail is more accessible. The lush greenery of the moss and the flow of the waterfalls are at their peak during this time.
Getting There
To reach the start of the hiking trail you need to get off the Ring road and drive to the parking space near the trail. Depending on the weather conditions you might need a 4x4 vehicle. Reaching Múlagljúfur Canyon involves a short but rewarding hike. The trailhead is accessible from a gravel road that branches off from the main Ring Road near the Fjallsárlón glacial lagoon. From the parking area, the hike to the canyon is approximately 2.5 kilometers (about 1.5 miles) one way, taking about 1 to 1.5 hours depending on your pace.
The trail is relatively easy but can be uneven and muddy in some sections, so good hiking shoes are recommended. As you ascend, the path offers increasingly impressive views of the surrounding landscape, including the distant Vatnajökull Glacier. The final viewpoint rewards hikers with a panoramic view of the canyon, including Hangandifoss waterfall and the dramatic cliffs that enclose the gorge.
